The Culture, Conflict and Democracy Webinar, 12 Consecutive Thursdays 10:00 am -11:00 am ET Starting 2/27/20

It does not take a doomsday prophet to realize that these are difficult times. Few can be sanguine that our children will inherit a more peaceful world or healthy planet. Very few can even be certain that we are not heading into economic, political or ecological upheaval, if not collapse.

DEMO SAPIENS, THE WEBINAR, is based on 30 years of experience as a teacher of critical and creative thinking; cross cultural consultant and practitioner of conflict management. Over the past decade, working with individuals, communities, organizations and governments, it is evident that open and free societies everywhere are facing unprecedented threats to their cohesion and sustainability. Hence, since 2013, I have been trying to find ways to strengthen the values and culture of democratic societies. For all its evident faults, liberal democracy is the only political system that gives people the right to govern themselves- while permitting dissent and protecting minorities from the worst excesses of majoritarian caprice and prejudice. It also happens to be the system of government under which humanity has achieved extraordinary levels of creativity, prosperity and even peace.

DEMO SAPIENS is twelve webinars of 90 minutes each. Given the complexities of the 21st Century, it is no longer possible for most of us to understand the many moving pieces that go into shaping our world and the effects they have on each other. DEMO SAPIENS is designed to help:

  1. Demystify the extraordinary times we live in and recognize the key factors that make our world what it is.
  2. Understand how our freedoms and rights are a happy historic aberration and learn how they came about.
  3. Discover how, much of what we desire, Equality, Freedom and Security can often be in conflict with each other.
  4. Explore our social and political evolution and what that can tell us about the nature and sustainability of democratic societies.
  5. Enjoy our beauty and vulnerability as social and biological beings, while knowing the inevitable limitations they place on human societies.
  6. Recognize the unique threats and vulnerabilities that we face today in our technological, globalized and (even more) fragmented world.
  7. Appreciate what it means to be Homo Sapiens and what we need to learn as a species to survive and thrive.

DEMO SAPIENS is looking for participants who are interested in actively engaging with our democracy, politics and culture in a well-informed, thoughtful and mature manner. The webinar is conveniently designed to accommodate most time zones. It is brought to you in association with Mediators Beyond Borders International and the Millennium Alliance for Humanity and the Biosphere (Stanford University).
