Green River Community College Launches Mediation and Peace Institute

Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington in September 2013 established the Green River Community Mediation and Peace-building Institute (GRCMAPI).   Dr. Eileen Ely, president of the college, stated:

GRCMAPI’s mediation services will be focused on the training of mediators and facilitators to assist in the resolution of disputes and the creation of peace in our local communities, especially in school districts, colleges, courts and law enforcement departments in the cites of Kent, Auburn and Enumclaw. Over time, an instructional program including a certificate in conflict transformation might eventually link to BMT (Basic Mediation Training) and specialist certifications to an Associate Degree within an appropriate program for those interested in the option.

The initiative has been led by Dr. Barry Bannister who has worked closely with the U.S. Institute of Peace in providing peacebuilding opportunities for the college.   He has also worked closely with local Washington State conflict resolution organizations and practitioners.   The GRCMAPI effort builds on the approach  at Howard Community College in Maryland that includes an associate degree and mediation center.
