The Forage Center for Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Education will hold its Coastal Promise Humanitarian and Peacebuilding Field Exercise September 20-23, 2018 in Swanton (Garrett County), MD, USA. The location is about a 2.5 hour drive west of Washington, DC, 2 hours south of Pittsburgh, and 3 hours east of Columbus, OH.
The exercise is open to individuals of all backgrounds, provided they have an interest in humanitarian and peacebuilding work. It is requested that applicants have a bachelor’s degree (though provisional acceptance can be granted in some cases for those who don’t have a degree). The fee for part-time or full-time students is $700; and $1,000 for working professionals. All applicants must be 18. International are encouraged to apply, but there is no scholarship available.
The closest airport is Pittsburgh International Airport, and the Forage Center can pick and return attendees there. The exercise starts on the afternoon of Thursday, September 20 and ends on the afternoon of Sunday, September 23.
The simulation provides an opportunity for individuals to experience working in a complex emergency situation characterized by both natural and manmade disasters. During the simulation, participants engage with government officials, military officials, internally displaced persons, and others to complete their mission as members of an NGO.
